Bevel vs WHOOP: An App for the Watch You Own, or a Strap With a Membership

Both answer the same morning question. Bevel is mostly free software for your Apple Watch. WHOOP is a strap from $199 a year. Here is how to choose.

ComparisonsWearablesApps

Bevel and WHOOP answer the same morning question. Am I recovered. The difference is what you have to wear, and what you have to pay, to hear the answer.

One disclosure. I build Mallet, so I compete with both. Everything below was checked against each company's own pages on October 10, 2026. Prices and features move. Check theirs before you buy.

The Real Difference Is Hardware

Bevel is software. It reads the Apple Watch you already own, and it also lists Garmin, Oura, and Google Health as sources. Nothing new goes on your wrist.

WHOOP is a strap. No screen, worn day and night, included with the membership. The app is the other half of the product, and it runs on iPhone and Android.

So the first question is not which score is better. It is whether you want to sleep in a watch, or wear a second band.

What Each One Costs

Bevel's core is free. Recovery, sleep, strain, stress, food logging, and strength tracking cost nothing. Bevel Pro is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US, and adds the AI coach, lab uploads, and Biological Age.

WHOOP is a yearly membership with the strap included. In the US, WHOOP One is $199 a year, Peak is $239, and Life is $359. There is no free tier.

Pick Bevel If

  • You already own an Apple Watch. You get the recovery picture without another device.
  • You want to try the idea first. Free is the cheapest way to learn whether a recovery score changes how you train.
  • You want food in the same app. Bevel logs meals itself. WHOOP leans on other apps for that.

Pick WHOOP If

  • You do not want a screen. A strap you forget about is the whole point for a lot of athletes.
  • You are on Android. Bevel is not an option there yet.
  • You want the hardware extras. ECG and blood pressure insights live in the Life tier.

What Neither One Is Built For

Both are good at telling you how the body is doing. Neither checks whether three supplements doubled the same ingredient. Neither is built to hold a peptide cycle. And a recovery score, from either one, is still an input. It should not get to write the whole week.

That is the layer I am building Mallet for. It reads wearable data, including Apple Health and WHOOP, and puts it next to supplements, protocols, labs, food, and training. If that is the gap, start with the WHOOP alternative piece or the Bevel alternative piece.

Keep the strap or keep the watch. Give the recovery number a job description. Mallet puts it next to food, training, labs, and your stack so a red day can change the week without running it. Get early access →

This Week

Before you buy a strap, run Bevel's free tier on the watch you own for two weeks. If the score changes one training decision, you have learned that this kind of number helps you. If it does not, a more expensive version of the same number will not either. Not sure what Bevel includes? Read what is free and what is Pro. And if the score and your body disagree, read who gets the vote.
